Apraxia of Speech:

Apraxia of speech is known by many names.  Childhood apraxia speech (CAS), Apraxia of Speech (AOS), Developmental dyspraxia, Developmental Apraxia, Developmental verbal apraxia but they are all the same condition.  A child with CAS often times knows what they want to say but have difficulty coordinating tongue, lips and cheeks also known as articulators to form words.  

  • Inconsistent production of words
  • Stress can be placed on the wrong syllable
  • Distortions and changes sounds
  • Often times can say shorter words more clearly than longer words with more syllables.

In addition, children with CAS may have difficultly with:

  • Fine motor delays such as poor coloring or writing 
  • Delayed language
  • Difficulty with reading, writing and spelling
